Summer Youth Programs Transportation Details!

Making your transporation arrangements early helps ensure smooth travels and allows our staff to prepare for your arrival! 

So where is Michigan Tech? We are located in Houghton, Michigan, near the shores of Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula. Our Summer Youth Programs offers a chaperoned charter bus service from select locations in the Midwest-including Lansing, Detroit, Bay City, Gaylord, Kalamazoo*, Chicago*, Milwaukee* Green Bay*, and Iron Mountain*.  Other travel options include by car, or plane (CMX Houghton County Memorial Airport).  *July 10–23 only

SYP Participant and Team Win Verizon App Challenge

We are always thrilled to see our Summer Youth Program participants accomplish great things in their communities!

This week a group of Wilson Middle school students, including SYP alumni Alec Brovont, were announced the Best in State for Michigan and voted Fan Favorite during the National Verizon App Challenge for their app concept called "Pop" (Protect our Parks). The students will be awarded $20,000 for their school and a chance to build their concept into a working app.

SYP Competitive Scholarship Programs

Each year talented students are selected to attend the various scholarship programs at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan. If your middle or high school student is interested in applying to one of these programs, have them submit an application along with a teacher recommednation, an unofficial transcript, and their responses to the short essay questions.

Students' Top 5 Memories from Our Summer Youth Programs

Every student has a reason for attending a summer camp. Maybe they like making new friends, want to see if they really like forensic science or maybe you're making them attend! While many students are excited at the opportunity, a few are nervous, but all students take away their own experiences and great memories from their time at Michigan Tech's Summer Youth Programs (SYP).

From Bahrain to the Women in Engineering Program!

In 1982, Michele Kimpel Guzman had what she now calls a “life changing experience.” The then-teenage high school student attended the Women in Engineering Program, sponsored by Michigan Technological University’s Summer Youth Program.

In a letter to SYP she said “The experiences I gained there were so inspirational that I became an engineer.” Kimpel Guzman pursued her education and she carries that special summer week in Houghton with her during a 17-year career as an engineer.

The memories of what she gained as a teen didn’t end when she left engineering to pursue her current career working as a diplomat for the U.S. State Department.
